What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) continuously monitors the voltage from the rear heated oxygen sensor on bank 2, which is the rear cylinder row beside the passenger compartment, with cylinders 2, 4, 6 and 8. The code is set when the voltage falls outside the permitted range, and the signal has stuck in the lean position.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance and oxidation in the connections
- Signal wire shorted to earth
- Open circuit in the signal wire
- Damaged rear oxygen sensor
What you can do
- 1Start the engine, let it idle for a while, and then read the status of the code
- 2Check the connectors to the rear oxygen sensor on bank 2 for contact resistance and oxidation. Rust-dissolving spray and grease should not be used
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire has no break and is not shorted to earth
- 4If the wiring is in order, try a new rear oxygen sensor
- 5If the fault remains, have a workshop diagnose further
Symptoms you may notice1
- Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) lit
What the fault can affect1
- Rear oxygen sensor control is switched off
