What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) continuously monitors the voltage from the rear heated oxygen sensor on bank 1, which is the cylinder row nearest the front with cylinders 1, 3, 5 and 7. The code concerns sensor 3 and is set when the voltage is not within the permitted range, here with the signal stuck in the rich position.
Possible causes
- Signal wire shorted to supply voltage
- Internal fault in the rear oxygen sensor on bank 1, sensor 3
What you can do
- 1Start the engine, let it idle for a while, and then read the status of the code
- 2Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire is not shorted to supply voltage
- 3Check the connectors to the rear oxygen sensor for contact resistance and oxidation. Rust-dissolving spray and grease should not be used in the connector
- 4If the wiring is in order, try a new rear oxygen sensor
- 5If the fault remains, have a workshop diagnose further
Symptoms you may notice1
- Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) lit
What the fault can affect1
- Rear oxygen sensor control is switched off
