What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) monitors the signal line to the ignition coil primary winding. The code is set when the signal is too low, and in this case it concerns ignition coil 3. The code is general and does not specify a fault type, but it shows that ignition coil 3 is the affected one and not another coil.
Possible causes
- The signal wire to ignition coil 3 is short-circuited to ground
- The ignition coil is damaged
What you can do
- 1Check that the relevant fuses are intact; their locations are shown in the car's owner's manual
- 2Read and note the code, clear it and run a test drive to see whether it returns
- 3Inspect the cable to ignition coil 3 for chafing, pinching and places where it may have touched the body
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire to ignition coil 3 has no contact with ground (the body)
- 5Check the connector at ignition coil 3 for loose contacts and corrosion
- 6If the fault returns, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the ignition coil and its wire
Symptoms you may notice2
- The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) lights up
- Not all cylinders are firing properly
