What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) monitors the signal line to the ignition coil primary winding. The code is set when the signal is too high, which here means the signal line to ignition coil 3 has been short-circuited to supply voltage. It is an electrical fault in the circuit, and the code applies only to ignition coil 3.
Possible causes
- The signal wire to ignition coil 3 is short-circuited to supply voltage
- The ignition coil is damaged
What you can do
- 1The fuses for engine management should be intact; their locations are shown in the car's owner's manual
- 2Read and note the code, clear it, then drive for a while to see whether it returns
- 3Inspect the connector and cable at ignition coil 3 for loose contacts, corrosion and chafing
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the wire to ignition coil 3 has no contact with supply voltage
- 5If the fault returns, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the ignition coil and the wiring
Symptoms you may notice2
- The engine warning lamp (Check engine) lights up or behaves abnormally
- The car runs poorly and lacks power
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
