What does this fault code mean?
This code applies to ignition coil 4 and says nothing more about the fault type than that the signal to it is too low. The engine control module (ECM) monitors the signal line to the ignition coil primary winding and sets the code when the signal falls below the permitted range.
Possible causes
- The signal wire to ignition coil 4 is short-circuited to ground
- The ignition coil is damaged
What you can do
- 1Check that the relevant fuses are intact; their locations are shown in the car's owner's manual
- 2Read and note the code, clear it, then drive a short distance to see whether it returns
- 3Follow the cable to ignition coil 4 and look for chafing or places where it may have touched the body
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire to ignition coil 4 has no contact with ground
- 5Check that the connector at ignition coil 4 is firmly seated and free from corrosion
- 6If the fault returns, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the ignition coil
Symptoms you may notice2
- The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) lights up
- Not all cylinders are firing properly
