What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) measures the signal to ignition coil 4 and sets the code when it is too low. This means the signal wire has been short-circuited to ground. The fault is electrical and applies only to this ignition coil.
Possible causes
- Short circuit to ground in the signal wire to ignition coil 4
- The ignition coil is damaged
What you can do
- 1The fuses should be intact; see the car's owner's manual for where they are
- 2Read and clear the code, test drive and see whether it returns
- 3Check the connector at ignition coil 4 for loose contacts and corrosion
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire to ignition coil 4 has no contact with ground (the body)
- 5Follow the wiring harness and look for chafing and pinched sections, especially at clips and grommets
- 6If the fault returns, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the ignition coil and the wiring
Symptoms you may notice2
- The engine warning lamp (Check engine) lights up or behaves abnormally
- The car runs poorly and lacks power
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
