What does this fault code mean?

The signal to ignition coil 5 is too high according to the engine control module (ECM), which then sets the code. This means the signal wire to the ignition coil has been short-circuited to supply voltage. The code gives no more specific fault type and applies only to ignition coil 5.

    Possible causes

    • The signal wire to ignition coil 5 is short-circuited to supply voltage
    • The ignition coil is damaged

    What you can do

    1. 1Check that the relevant fuses are intact; their locations are shown in the instruction manual
    2. 2Read and note the code, clear it, then test drive to see whether it returns
    3. 3Follow the cable to ignition coil 5 and look for chafed places and places where it may have contact with supply voltage
    4. 4Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire to ignition coil 5 has no contact with supply voltage
    5. 5Check the connector at ignition coil 5 for loose contacts and corrosion
    6. 6If the fault returns, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the ignition coil and the wiring

    Symptoms you may notice2

    • The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) lights up
    • Not all cylinders are firing properly

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
