What does this fault code mean?
The fault is stored as intermittent/erratic, meaning it comes and goes and does not have to be present right now. The engine control module (ECM) measures the current through the leakage diagnosis pump while the leak diagnostic runs. If the current trace is erratic, the control module assumes the reference reading was wrong, and the code is set.
Possible causes
- Dirt or moisture in the pump
- Damaged heating element in the pump
- Damaged leakage diagnosis pump
What you can do
- 1Check that the relevant fuses are intact; their locations are shown in the car's owner's manual
- 2Read and clear the code, then see whether it returns when the leak diagnostic is run again
- 3Check the connector to the leak diagnostic unit for loose contacts and signs of oxidation
- 4Check the hoses and connections on the leak diagnostic unit, canister and filler pipe for damage or loose fitting
- 5Have a workshop check the engine control module software first; an upgrade can cure the code, and 2007–2008 cars should be checked
- 6If the fault returns, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment decide whether the leak diagnostic unit needs replacing
Symptoms you may notice3
- The engine warning lamp (Check engine) lights up or behaves abnormally
- The malfunction indicator lamp lights up
- A warning symbol and a text message appear in the display
What the fault can affect1
- The leakage diagnosis is interrupted
