What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) checks the control signal to the heater element in the leakage diagnosis pump and sets the code when it registers a fault in that signal. The fault that applies here is a short circuit to ground in the signal wire to the heater element.
Possible causes
- The signal wire to the heater element is short-circuited to ground
- Damaged leakage diagnosis pump
What you can do
- 1Check that the relevant fuses are intact; their locations are shown in the car's owner's manual
- 2Read and clear the code, then check whether it returns
- 3Inspect the connector to the leak diagnostic unit for contact resistance, meaning loose contacts and oxidation
- 4Follow the signal wire to the heater element and look for chafing and pinching, especially where it may have touched the body
- 5Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire to the heater element has no contact with ground (the body)
- 6If the fault returns, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the leak diagnostic pump
Symptoms you may notice2
- The malfunction indicator lamp lights up
- The engine warning lamp (Check engine) lights up or behaves abnormally
