What does this fault code mean?
The exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve has jammed either in the open or in the closed position. The engine control module (ECM) compares the valve's position sensor value with the expected value, and the code is set when they do not agree. The fault can show as hesitation, poor performance or uneven idle.
Possible causes
- Blocked EGR valve
- Damaged position sensor
- Damaged EGR valve
- The EGR valve has jammed
What you can do
- 1Check that the air intake and the hoses in the engine bay are not leaking and are undamaged
- 2Check that the EGR valve and its connections are not blocked by soot
- 3Check that the wires to the EGR valve have no chafing or pinching and that the connectors are firmly seated
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool, activate the EGR valve and listen for a clicking sound; also check whether the position value in live data changes when it is activated
- 5If the valve does not click or seems to stick, have a workshop clean or replace the EGR valve
- 6After repair, a workshop needs to carry out an adaptation of the EGR valve with diagnostic equipment
Symptoms you may notice5
- The car runs poorly and lacks power
- The engine hesitates or surges, both during acceleration and during deceleration
- The running is jerky, either now and then or all the time
- The engine warning lamp (Check engine) lights up or behaves abnormally
- Uneven idle
