What does this fault code mean?
The exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve has mechanically stuck, either in the open or in the closed position, so it cannot move freely. The engine control module (ECM) checks the valve position and learns the position when the ignition is switched on. The code is set when the stuck position is detected at engine switch-off.
Possible causes
- Blocked EGR valve
- Damaged position sensor
- Damaged EGR valve
What you can do
- 1Check that the air intake and the hoses in the engine bay are not leaking and are undamaged
- 2Look at the EGR valve connections for soot deposits that may block it
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool, activate the EGR valve and listen for a clicking sound. Also check that the position sensor value changes when it is activated
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the wires to the EGR valve are not short-circuited to ground or supply voltage, and that the connectors are firmly seated
- 5If the valve does not click or seems to stick, have a workshop clean or replace the EGR valve and carry out an adaptation
- 6If the fault returns, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the position sensor

- The car runs poorly and lacks power, for example when pulling away from standstill
- Uneven idle
- The engine hesitates or surges, for example at steady speed
- The engine does not start, either now and then or all the time
- The engine hesitates or surges during acceleration and during deceleration
