What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) checks the signal from the front oxygen sensor, which measures the fuel/air mixture in the exhaust gases. The code is set when the signal is incorrect, for example if the sensor only indicates air and no mixture. The fault applies to bank 1 and sensor 1, that is, the front sensor on the first bank.
Possible causes
- Incorrectly installed heated oxygen sensor
- Damaged front heated oxygen sensor
- Poor contact or oxidation at connectors or joints
- Damaged heated oxygen sensor
What you can do
- 1Check that the oxygen sensor is correctly installed in the exhaust system
- 2Inspect the oxygen sensor connector for loose contacts and oxidation. Do not use rust-solvent spray or grease in the connector
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the wires to the oxygen sensor have no open circuit
- 4If the fault remains after these checks, have a workshop try a new oxygen sensor
- 5If the fault still remains, have a workshop decide whether the engine control module has an internal fault, which is remedied by replacing the module
Symptoms you may notice2
- The malfunction indicator lamp lights up
- The engine warning lamp (Check engine) lights up or behaves abnormally
What the fault can affect2
- The oxygen sensor control is disabled
- The catalytic converter diagnostics are disabled
