What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) drives the bypass valve of the EGR cooler and checks it, so that the recirculated exhaust air gets the best possible temperature. The valve is driven by a pulse-width modulated (PWM) signal, and the code is set when the control signal is wrong. The code applies only to the control of the bypass valve.
Possible causes
- Poor contact or oxidation at connectors or joints
- Open circuit in the signal wire
- Damaged bypass valve
What you can do
- 1Check that the relevant fuses are intact; their locations are shown in the car's owner's manual
- 2Inspect the connector at the EGR cooler bypass valve for contact resistance, loose contacts and oxidation
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire to the bypass valve has no open circuit
- 4If the fault returns, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the bypass valve and its wire
Symptoms you may notice1
- No noticeable symptoms for the driver
