What does this fault code mean?

This fault applies to bank 1. The engine control module (ECM) keeps an eye on the front exhaust temperature sensor after the catalytic converter and makes additional checks for high exhaust heat. The code is set when the exhaust temperature is too high, and regeneration of the particle filter is then blocked, since very high temperatures could cause uncontrolled burning of soot in the filter.

    Possible causes

    • Damaged exhaust temperature sensor after the catalytic converter
    • A fault covered by another fault code, which should be traced first
    • Too much diesel in the engine oil
    • Contaminated engine oil
    • Knock-on fault from a fault found by another code test on the injectors and/or fuel system
    • Damaged injection valves

    What you can do

    1. 1Check the oil dipstick: if the level has risen or the oil smells strongly of diesel, that may be the cause
    2. 2Inspect the exhaust temperature sensor after the catalytic converter and its connector for loose contacts and oxidation
    3. 3Deal with other fault codes stored in the control module first, since this code may be a knock-on fault
    4. 4If you have a diagnostic tool, follow the exhaust temperature in live data with the engine running and see whether it rises sharply
    5. 5Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the injection valves and the fuel system, since the code may come from there

    Symptoms you may notice5

    • The engine warning lamp (Check engine) lights up or behaves abnormally
    • A warning symbol and a text message appear in the display
    • The car runs poorly and lacks power
    • The engine stalls, either now and then or all the time
    • The engine stalls on starting

    What the fault can affect3

    • The engine is switched off
    • Engine output and speed are limited
    • EGR control and soot burning are lost

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
