What does this fault code mean?
Although the code is named EGR cooler efficiency below threshold, it applies when the signal from the bypass valve position sensor is too low. The engine control module (ECM) drives the bypass valve, which gives the recirculated exhaust air the best possible temperature, and checks the valve position with the sensor.
Possible causes
- Poor contact or oxidation at connectors or joints
- Signal wire short-circuited to ground
- Damaged bypass valve
What you can do
- 1Check that the relevant fuses are intact; their locations are shown in the car's owner's manual
- 2Inspect the connector at the EGR cooler bypass valve for contact resistance, looseness and oxidation
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire to the bypass valve is not short-circuited to ground
- 4If the fault returns, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the bypass valve and its position sensor
Symptoms you may notice1
- No noticeable symptoms for the driver
