What does this fault code mean?
Although the code is named EGR cooler efficiency below threshold, it applies when the signal from the bypass valve position sensor is too high. The engine control module (ECM) drives the bypass valve so that the recirculated exhaust air stays at the best possible temperature, and checks the valve position with the sensor.
Possible causes
- Poor contact or oxidation at connectors or joints
- Signal wire short-circuited to supply voltage
- Open circuit in the signal wire
- Damaged bypass valve
What you can do
- 1Check that the connectors at the bypass valve are firmly seated and not oxidised
- 2Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire to the bypass valve has no contact with supply voltage
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire to the bypass valve has no open circuit
- 4If the fault returns, have a workshop check the bypass valve and its wiring with diagnostic equipment
Symptoms you may notice1
- No noticeable symptoms for the driver
