What does this fault code mean?
The code is set when the burn-off of soot in the filter does not finish within the permitted time. The engine control module (ECM) decides when a regeneration is needed, and it normally takes place automatically while driving. The counter that tracks the filter's operating time is reset at soot combustion and when fault codes are cleared.
Possible causes
- Overheated particle filter
- Damaged particle filter
- The soot burn-off has not happened by itself in the filter
- Requirements for soot burn-off in the filter are not satisfied
What you can do
- 1Drive the car on open roads now and then, so the particle filter can burn off soot automatically when the conditions are met
- 2If you have a diagnostic tool, read the soot quantity in the particle filter in live data to see how much soot is present
- 3Have a workshop check whether the particle filter is overheated or damaged
- 4Have a workshop decide whether the soot should be burned off in a regeneration or whether the filter needs replacing
Symptoms you may notice4
- Fuel consumption is abnormally high
- The car runs poorly and lacks power, even when pulling away from standstill
- The engine hesitates or surges during acceleration or deceleration
- A warning symbol and a text message appear in the display
What the fault can affect2
- Combustion of soot particles is ended
- Engine torque is limited
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
