What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) drives the EGR cooler bypass valve through an internal output stage. The code is stored when the signal to the valve is incorrect, and If the fault is no longer present when you read the code, it may have been intermittent. If it returns, it should be traced as a permanent fault.
Possible causes
- Signal wire short-circuited to supply voltage
- Damaged bypass valve
- Signal wire short-circuited to ground (see ECM-P245A00)
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connectors, or open circuit in the signal wire (see ECM-P245B00)
- Short-circuit to supply voltage (see ECM-P245C00)
What you can do
- 1Start the engine and read the fault status; if the code is no longer active, the fault may have been intermittent
- 2Check that the relevant fuses are intact
- 3Check that the connector to the EGR cooler bypass valve is secure and free from oxidation and moisture
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire is not short-circuited to plus (supply voltage)
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool, read the signal to the bypass valve in live data while the engine runs and see whether it sits at an unexpectedly high value
- 6If the fault returns after these checks, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the bypass valve
Symptoms you may notice1
- No noticeable symptoms for the driver
