What does this fault code mean?
The ECM tracks how much soot is in the diesel particulate filter. The code is stored as a second level, when the soot level has exceeded a certain limit and the pressure difference across the filter is too great. At this level the control module can no longer start soot combustion on its own, so further action is needed.
Possible causes
- Damaged particle filter
- Excess soot in the filter
- Soot combustion insufficient or blocked
- Increased soot generation by the engine, for example from an EGR fault, or air leakage in the intake system
- Damaged pressure sensor for the particle filter
- The vehicle has been driven a lot in urban traffic
What you can do
- 1If you have a diagnostic tool, read the amount of soot in the particle filter, since soot combustion can only be done when the amount is low enough
- 2During normal driving on country roads the engine control module can start soot combustion by itself, so drive the car that way when possible
- 3If the particle filter fills quickly or often, this may be due to leaks and damage in the intake system; check hoses and connections
- 4If the message Engine management system service required appears, the engine control module can no longer start soot combustion on its own; have a workshop check the filter
- 5If the particle filter is so clogged that soot combustion must not be carried out, there is a fire hazard. The filter must then be replaced, which a workshop does
Symptoms you may notice3
- The Check engine lamp may come on or behave abnormally
- Text message in the display
- The car may feel weak or lack power
What the fault can affect3
- Engine torque is limited
- EGR control does not take place
- Soot combustion does not take place
