What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module monitors the circuit to the system relay coil, which receives voltage through a fuse in the engine bay's distribution box and is earthed in the module. The code is stored when there is no voltage in the circuit. The cause may be poor contact, an open circuit or a short to ground in the circuit, a damaged system relay or an internal fault in the engine control module.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the terminals
- Open circuit or short-circuit to ground
- Damaged system relay
- Damaged engine control module
- Internal fault in the engine control module
What you can do
- 1Read the code, note it and clear it. Start the engine to see whether it returns; if it does not appear, the fault may have been intermittent
- 2Check that the relevant fuses are intact. Their locations are in the instruction manual or on the cover of the fuse box
- 3Check that the connectors at the engine control module and the system relay are secure and free from oxidation
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the circuit to the system relay coil has no open circuit and is not short-circuited to ground
- 5If the fault returns, have a workshop assess whether the engine control module needs replacing, since an internal fault cannot be remedied by the owner
Symptoms you may notice3
- The engine does not start, sometimes or at all times
- The engine does not turn over when starting is attempted
- No clicking sound when starting is attempted
