What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) checks the circuit to the system relay coil, which is fed from a fuse in the engine bay's distribution box and is earthed in the module. The code is stored when the voltage in the circuit is too high. Possible causes are a cable shorted to ground, a damaged system relay or an internal fault in the ECM.
Possible causes
- Cable short-circuited to ground
- Damaged system relay
- Damaged engine control module
- Internal fault in the engine control module
What you can do
- 1Start the engine and read the fault status; if nothing is active, the fault may have been intermittent
- 2Check that the relevant fuses are intact. Their locations are in the instruction manual or on the cover of the fuse box
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the cable to the system relay coil is not short-circuited to ground (body)
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool, read the fault counter and the freeze-frame values to see how often the fault has occurred
- 5If the fault returns, the engine control module must be replaced, which a workshop does
Symptoms you may notice3
- The engine does not start, sometimes or at all times
- The engine does not turn over when starting is attempted
- No clicking sound when starting is attempted
