What does this fault code mean?
The ECM reads the signal from the oil level sensor and uses it to monitor the oil level. The code is stored when that signal is incorrect, which may be an electrical fault in the sensor or its wiring. Water or fuel in the engine oil can also trigger it.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance, oxidation or loose contact in the connections
- Open circuit in the signal wire
- Open circuit in the power supply
- Water or fuel in the engine oil
- Damaged oil level sensor
What you can do
- 1Read the fault status with the engine running. If the code is not active, the fault may have been intermittent
- 2Check that the relevant fuses are intact
- 3Check whether water or fuel may have got into the engine oil. If so, the code can be set, and the remedy is to run the engine fully warm
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the power supply and signal wire to the oil level sensor have no open circuit
- 5If the fault remains after these checks, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the oil level sensor
Symptoms you may notice1
- The oil pressure warning lamp comes on or behaves abnormally
