What does this fault code mean?
Although the code is named engine oil level sensor, it concerns the oil temperature sensor. The ECM checks its reading, and the code is stored when the reading is incorrect. Possible causes are poor contact, open circuits in the supply or signal wire, a wire shorted to ground, or a damaged oil temperature sensor.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
- Open circuit in the power supply cable
- Open circuit in the signal cable
- Signal cable short-circuited to ground
- Power supply cable short-circuited to ground
- Damaged oil temperature sensor
What you can do
- 1If you have a diagnostic tool, read the oil temperature in live data with the engine running and check that the value follows the engine warming up
- 2Check that the relevant fuses are intact
- 3Check the connector to the oil temperature sensor for contact resistance and oxidation
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the wires to the oil temperature sensor have no open circuit and are not short-circuited to ground (body)
- 5If the fault remains after these checks, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the oil temperature sensor
