What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) receives too low a signal from the position sensor that controls the turbo's variable guide vanes. The position sensor tells the module where the vanes are. Without a valid signal, the module uses a fixed value for the turbo position instead.
Possible causes
- Loose connections
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Moisture in the air intake system
- Damaged position sensor
- Open circuit on the signal wire
What you can do
- 1Check that the connector to the turbo position sensor is firmly seated and free from oxidation
- 2Check the sensor wiring for chafing and breaks, and with a multimeter that it is not shorted to ground
- 3Check the air intake system for moisture or water
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: read the position sensor value in live data and see whether it changes as the engine revs up
- 5Erase the code and test drive; if it returns after checking the connector, wiring and air intake, have a workshop check the position sensor
Symptoms you may notice2
- Check engine light comes on or behaves abnormally
- The car feels sluggish or lacks power
What the fault can affect2
- Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) control stops
- The engine control module uses a fixed value for the turbo position
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
