What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) receives too high a signal from the position sensor that controls the turbo's variable guide vanes. The position sensor tells the module where the vanes are. When the signal is too high, the module uses a fixed value for the turbo position instead.
Possible causes
- Loose connections
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
- Moisture in the air intake system
- Open circuit on the signal wire
- Signal wire shorted to supply voltage
- Damaged position sensor
What you can do
- 1Check that the connector to the turbo position sensor is firmly seated and free from oxidation
- 2Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire is not touching the positive supply and has no break
- 3Check the air intake system for moisture or water
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: read the position sensor value in live data and see whether it changes as the engine revs up
- 5Erase the code and test drive; if it returns after checking the connector, wiring and air intake, have a workshop check the position sensor
Symptoms you may notice1
- Check engine light comes on or behaves abnormally
What the fault can affect2
- Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) control stops
- The engine control module uses a fixed value for the turbo position
