What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) controls the relay that activates the electric brake vacuum pump, which helps the brake booster build vacuum. The code is set when the signal to the pump's control circuit is too low or missing. The fault may lie in the relay, the wiring, the connectors or the engine control module.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation at the connections
- Open circuit in the signal wire
- Damaged relay
- Damaged engine control module (ECM)
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses for the vacuum pump are intact
- 2Check the connectors to the pump and relay for oxidation and loose connections
- 3Check the signal wire for chafing and breaks
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: activate the vacuum pump and listen for it to start
- 5Do not keep driving if the brake pedal becomes hard to press; have a workshop fix the fault
- 6If the fault remains after these checks, have a workshop check the relay and the engine control module
Symptoms you may notice2
- Yellow warning symbol and text message in the display
- Brake pedal requires more effort than normal
