What does this fault code mean?
The signal to the control circuit for the brake vacuum pump is too low. The engine control module (ECM) drives the pump relay, and the pump helps the brake booster build vacuum. The code is set when the signal is too low, and the cause may be the wiring, the connectors, the relay or the engine control module.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation at the connections
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Damaged relay
- Damaged engine control module (ECM)
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses are intact
- 2Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire to the pump is not shorted to ground
- 3Check the connections in the pump and relay wiring for contact resistance and oxidation
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool, activate the pump; it should run when you do
- 5If the brake pedal becomes heavy to press, do not drive on until a workshop has fixed the fault
- 6If the fault remains after these checks, a workshop can decide whether the relay or the engine control module is damaged
Symptoms you may notice2
- Yellow warning symbol and text message in the display
- Brake pedal requires more effort than normal
