What does this fault code mean?
The signal to the control circuit for the brake vacuum pump is too high while the engine runs. The engine control module (ECM) drives the pump relay, and the pump helps the brake booster build vacuum. The fault may come from a signal wire shorted to supply voltage, poor connections, the relay or the engine control module.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation at the connections
- Signal wire shorted to supply voltage
- Damaged relay
- Damaged engine control module (ECM)
What you can do
- 1Confirm that the fuses for the pump circuit are whole
- 2Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire is not shorted to the positive supply
- 3Check the connectors to the pump and relay for oxidation, loose fit and raised resistance
- 4If the brake pedal becomes hard to press, do not keep driving until a workshop has fixed the fault
- 5If the fault remains, a workshop should decide whether the relay or the engine control module is damaged
Symptoms you may notice2
- Yellow warning symbol and text message in the display
- Brake pedal requires more effort than normal
