What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) keeps watch on the coolant pump relay, which protects the pump against excessive current. The code is set when the relay is probably overloaded, or when an internal fault arises in the module's output stage. The pump is then switched off, which can show up as uneven temperature in the climate control.
Possible causes
- Loose connection or oxidation in the connector
- Short circuit between the connections
- Damaged coolant pump relay
- Damaged output stage in the engine control module (ECM)
What you can do
- 1Check the fuses for the coolant pump
- 2Check the connectors at the relay and pump for loose connections and oxidation
- 3The fault is often intermittent in nature, so repeat the check several times and test drive the car
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: first check for other stored codes, since those should be traced before this one
- 5If the fault remains, have a workshop decide whether the relay or the module's output stage is damaged
