What does this fault code mean?
The time since the engine was last switched off is sent by the central electronic module (CEM) over the CAN network. The engine control module (ECM) works out its own estimate from changes in engine and intake air temperature. The code is set when the two values differ too much. Engine heater use or sudden outdoor temperature changes can set the code incorrectly.
Possible causes
- Malfunction found by another diagnostic function in the engine control module, such as the engine temperature or inlet air pressure sensor
- Malfunction found by the central electronic module (CEM)
- Open circuit in one of the CAN wires
- Short circuit between the CAN wires
- Internal fault in the CEM, the engine control module or another control module on the same part of the CAN network
What you can do
- 1Read the codes in the CEM and in the other control modules on the CAN network, and fix those first
- 2Check the CAN connectors, especially at the CEM and the engine control module, for loose contacts and oxidation
- 3If the code appeared only after use of an engine heater or sudden temperature changes, it may have been set incorrectly
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: read the frozen values of the code to see what temperatures applied when it was set
- 5If the code returns, have a workshop decide whether the fault lies in the CEM, the engine control module or another system on the CAN network
Symptoms you may notice1
- No noticeable symptoms for the driver
What the fault can affect1
- The engine control module uses its own calculated time
