What does this fault code mean?
The fault concerns an invalid time signal after the engine has been switched off. The engine control module (ECM) compares the time from the CEM over the CAN network with its own estimate, and the code is set if the difference becomes too large. The module's internal clock is also checked, and a clock that has stopped in standby can set the code. Engine heater use or sudden outdoor temperature changes can also trigger it incorrectly.
Possible causes
- Malfunction found by another diagnostic function in the engine control module, such as the engine temperature or inlet air sensor
- Malfunction found by the CEM
- Open circuit or short circuit on the CAN wiring
- Internal fault in the CEM, the engine control module or another module on the same part of the CAN network
What you can do
- 1Read the codes in the CEM and other CAN-connected modules, and fix those first
- 2Make sure the CAN connectors, especially at the CEM, are not loose or oxidised
- 3If the code appeared after use of an engine heater or big temperature swings, it may have been set incorrectly, so check whether it returns
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool, check that the CEM responds and appears in the list of control modules
- 5If the code keeps returning, have a workshop decide whether the CEM, the engine control module or another module is at fault
Symptoms you may notice1
- Check engine light comes on or behaves abnormally
What the fault can affect1
- The calculated time is used instead of the time from the CEM
