What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) drives exhaust damper A with a pulse width modulated signal and checks that the signal is correct. The code is set when the signal to the damper is too low, and the cause may lie in the connections, the wiring or the damper itself.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance and oxidation in the connections
- The signal wire is shorted to ground
- The exhaust damper is damaged
- Exhaust damper A is on the right-hand side as seen in the direction of travel
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses are intact; their location is shown in the owner's manual
- 2Check the connector to damper A for contact resistance, oxidation and looseness
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire to damper A has no contact with ground (the body)
- 4With a diagnostic tool, activate damper A and check in live data whether the damper value changes when it is controlled
- 5Have a workshop check damper A if the fault remains after the connector and wiring checks
Symptoms you may notice3
- Unusual noise while driving, sometimes or all the time
- Unusual noise when the engine is switched off
- Unusual noise during acceleration
