What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) uses the oxygen sensor on bank 1, sensor 1 to assess the fuel and air mixture. The code is generic and is set when the module detects that the sensor signal is incorrect. The causes may lie in the wiring, in the connections or in the sensor itself.
Possible causes
- Signal wire shorted to voltage
- Damaged oxygen sensor
- Short to ground on the signal wire
- Open circuit in the signal wire
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
What you can do
- 1Read the code with a diagnostic tool and check whether it is active or only stored
- 2Check the connectors at the oxygen sensor and at the engine control module for contact resistance, looseness and oxidation
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire from the sensor has no break, no short to ground and no contact with positive supply
- 4With a diagnostic tool you can read the oxygen sensor value in live data when the engine is warm and see whether it responds to the throttle
- 5Have a workshop check the oxygen sensor if the fault remains after the connector check
Symptoms you may notice1
- No noticeable symptoms for the driver
