What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) communicates with the other control modules over the high speed CAN network. The code is set when the ECM detects a serious disturbance in the CAN communication. The disturbance may come from the wiring, the connectors or another control module on the same network.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation in connections and connectors
- Open circuit in one of the CAN wires
- Short circuit between the CAN wires, or to ground or voltage
- Internal fault in the ECM
- Internal fault in another control module on the same part of the CAN network
- Software fault in the control module
What you can do
- 1Read the codes in the other control modules; communication faults in several of them may point to a fault in the network
- 2Check the connectors to the engine control module for contact resistance, looseness and oxidation
- 3Gently move the connectors and the wiring harness with the ignition on, and see whether the code or the fault changes
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the CAN wires have no break and no contact with ground, voltage or each other
- 5Have a workshop read the CAN traffic and judge whether another control module is disturbing the network, since the fault does not always lie in the engine control module
Symptoms you may notice5
- General warning light on
- Cruise control does not work
- The engine jerks on acceleration and sharply after engine braking
- Uneven idling
- Message in the text display
What the fault can affect3
- The engine control module stops communicating on the CAN network and switches itself off
- The engine control module stays off until the voltage supply is broken and switched on again
- Engine torque may be limited
