What does this fault code mean?

The engine control module (ECM) receives information about the brake pedal status from the brake control module (BCM) all the time, including the cruise control off switch. The code is set when the signal from the off switch keeps the same data for too long, and it is then judged to be incorrect.

    Possible causes

    • Open circuit in the communication cable
    • Communication cable shorted to ground
    • Communication cable shorted to voltage
    • Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
    • Open circuit in the connections
    • Short circuit in the connections

    What you can do

    1. 1Read the code with a diagnostic tool and check whether it is active or only stored
    2. 2The brake system is safety critical, so have a workshop check the brake control module and the brake pedal function if the fault remains
    3. 3Check the connectors to the engine control module and the brake control module for contact resistance, looseness and oxidation
    4. 4Use a multimeter to check that the communication cable has no break and no contact with ground or voltage
    5. 5If you have a diagnostic tool: read the off switch status in live data while you press the brake pedal, and see that the value changes
    6. 6If the battery has been disconnected or the engine control module has been reprogrammed, press the brake pedal twice to activate the cruise control again

    Symptoms you may notice1

    • Cruise control does not engage

    What the fault can affect1

    • Cruise control is disengaged for as long as the fault is active

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
