What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) receives information about requested torque from the transmission control module (TCM) over the CAN network. The code is set when communication with the TCM stops, and it is stored in the engine control module.
Possible causes
- Fault in the transmission control module (TCM)
- Open circuit in one of the CAN wires
- Short circuit between the CAN wires
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the terminals and connections
- The engine control module is not intended for the car, for example a used module with other software or hardware
- The software has not been upgraded
What you can do
- 1Read the codes also in the transmission control module (TCM) and in the central electronic control module (CEM), since they may show where the fault is
- 2Check the connectors at the engine control module and the transmission control module for contact resistance and oxidation
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the CAN wires between the engine control module and the transmission control module have no break or short
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: clear the code and check whether it is set again after a test drive
- 5Have a workshop download new software to the engine control module or the transmission control module if needed
Symptoms you may notice4
- The automatic gearbox shifts hard or jerkily, both when upshifting and downshifting
- The automatic gearbox shifts hard or jerkily when a gear is engaged from standstill
- Cruise control does not engage
- Check engine light comes on or behaves abnormally
What the fault can affect2
- Torque requests from the transmission control module (TCM) are no longer used by the ECM
- Gear shifting quality becomes poor
