What does this fault code mean?
The ECM gets speed data for the car from the transmission control module (TCM) over CAN. The code is set when the checksum in the message from the TCM is wrong, which may be caused by a damaged TCM or by interference on the CAN network.
Possible causes
- Damaged transmission control module (TCM)
- Interference on the CAN network
What you can do
- 1Read the code with a diagnostic tool and see whether it is active or only stored
- 2Start with the codes in the transmission control module (TCM), since it sends the speed information
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool: compare the vehicle speed in live data with the speedometer during a test drive
- 4Have a workshop check the CAN network for interference, since the fault can come from the network and not only from the transmission control module
Symptoms you may notice1
- Check engine light comes on or behaves abnormally
What the fault can affect1
- The ECM uses the BCM's speed value instead, as long as that value is valid
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
