What does this fault code mean?
Even though the code is named a mechanical fault, it concerns the communication between the engine control module (ECM) and the forward sensing module (FSM). The code is set when the communication stops, and then cruise control cannot be activated.
Possible causes
- Open circuit in one of the CAN wires
- Short circuit between the CAN wires
- Communication cable shorted to ground or voltage
- Contact resistance, oxidation or open circuit in the connections
- The engine control module is not intended for the car, for example a used module with other software or hardware
- The fault may lie in the forward sensing module (FSM)
What you can do
- 1Read the code with a diagnostic tool and see whether it is active or only stored
- 2Start with the codes in the central electronic module (CEM), since several communication faults there point to a common fault in the network
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the CAN wires have no break, no short to each other and no contact with ground or voltage
- 4Check the connectors at the engine control module for contact resistance, oxidation and looseness
- 5Tell the workshop if the engine control module has recently been replaced, since a module not intended for the car can cause this code
