ECM-U010700 - Lost Communication With Throttle Actuator Control Module. General Failure Information. No sub type information
System
Engine Control Module (ECM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
2 modelsS80 (2007–), XC90 (2003–)
Show models by year and engine (2)
What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) compares the throttle position it requests with the actual position. The code is set when the difference is large enough to affect the exhaust emissions, and the throttle opening is then reduced. Even though the code is named lost communication, it concerns the difference between the requested and the actual position.
Possible causes
- Other codes are stored in the engine control module
- The throttle is sticking or blocked, for example by oil film, dust or ice build-up
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
- Damaged throttle unit
What you can do
- 1Read the code with a diagnostic tool and check whether it is active or only stored
- 2Deal with any other codes in the engine control module first, since they may be the cause
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool: read the throttle position in live data while you press the accelerator slowly, and check that the value follows
- 4Check the connectors to the throttle unit for contact resistance and oxidation
- 5Clean the throttle unit if it is dirty, since dirt and oil film can make it stick; have a workshop check it if the fault remains
Symptoms you may notice3
- Uneven idling and jerky running
- The engine lacks power, especially when pulling away from standstill
- The engine hesitates or surges on acceleration and at steady speed
What the fault can affect1
- The throttle opening is reduced
