What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) constantly receives data over the CAN network from the central electronics control module (CEM). The code is set when the engine control module registers a signal from the central electronics control module that it judges to be invalid. Although the code is titled lost communication with the battery energy control module “A”, it applies to the CAN communication with the central electronics control module.
Possible causes
- The central electronics control module (CEM) sends faulty or invalid signals
- Intermittent breaks in one or both CAN wires
- Intermittent short circuits between the CAN wires, or to ground or supply voltage
- Incorrect signal configuration in a control module that was replaced without new software being loaded
- A fault in another control module on the same part of the CAN network that sends faulty messages
What you can do
- 1Read the codes in the engine control module and first fix any other CAN-related codes, as they may share the same cause
- 2Clear the code and road test the car to see if it is set again
- 3Check the CAN wiring between the engine control module and the central electronics control module for chafing, pinched areas and loose connectors
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the CAN wires have no break and are not shorted to ground or supply voltage
- 5Check that the battery has good voltage and that the fuses are intact
- 6If the fault returns: have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the central electronics control module and the CAN communication. Do not work on the battery system yourself
Symptoms you may notice1
- No noticeable symptoms for the driver
