What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) controls the alternator charging voltage via LIN communication, on request from the central electronics control module (CEM), which sends its requests over CAN. The code is set when the engine control module loses communication with the alternator control module (ACM). Although the code is titled lost communication with the starter/generator control module, it refers to the alternator control module.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance and oxidation in the connections
- Short circuit between the LIN wires
- Open circuit in one of the LIN wires
- A LIN wire shorted to supply voltage or ground
- Faulty alternator control module (ACM), or faulty engine control module
- Alternator with a charge regulator that is not intended for LIN communication is fitted
What you can do
- 1Read the codes and fix other LIN-related codes first. With a diagnostic tool, check charging current in live data
- 2Check that the fuses are intact and that the battery is well charged with good voltage
- 3Check the connectors at the alternator and at the engine control module for oxidation and loose contacts
- 4Look for chafed or pinched wiring on the LIN signal wire. Use a multimeter to check that it has no break and is not shorted to ground or supply voltage
- 5Check the engine earth points to the body for loose or corroded connections
- 6If the fault returns: have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the alternator and its control module

- Charging warning light comes on or behaves abnormally
- Red warning symbol and text message in the display
- The battery discharges or shows low voltage
- The engine is hard to start or does not start, and the starter turns over slowly
- The engine hesitates, surges or runs unevenly, and lacks power at times
