What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) keeps taking in data from the brake control module (BCM) over the CAN network. The code is set when the engine control module detects a fault in CAN communication with the brake control module, or when an expected message from it is missing. Although the code is titled lost communication with the brake control module, it concerns communication between the engine control module and the brake control module.
Possible causes
- Break or short circuit on the CAN wires between the engine control module and the brake control module
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections on the CAN network
- One of the CAN wires is shorted to ground, to supply voltage or to another wire
- Internal fault in the engine control module
- Internal fault in another control module on the same part of the CAN network
- Fault in the brake control module (BCM)
What you can do
- 1Read the codes in the central electronics control module and other affected control modules, and fix them first. Then clear this code
- 2Check that the fuses are intact
- 3Check the CAN connectors at the engine control module and the brake control module for contact resistance and oxidation
- 4Look for chafed or pinched CAN wires. Use a multimeter to check that they have no break or short to ground, supply voltage or each other
- 5Clear the code and road test the car to see whether it is set again
- 6Do not work on the braking system yourself. If the fault returns: have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the brake control module and the CAN network
Symptoms you may notice4
- Starter motor cranks but the engine will not start
- The anti-spin function does not work
- Message in the text display and a warning symbol
- Check engine warning light comes on or behaves abnormally
