What does this fault code mean?
The brake control module (BCM) compares the speed of the driven wheels with the vehicle speed and, when slip is detected, requests increased torque from the engine over CAN. The code is set when the engine control module finds that this request is unreasonable in duration or size. Although the code is titled lost communication with the vehicle dynamics control module, it concerns the request for extra wheel torque from the brake control module.
Possible causes
- Fault in the brake control module (BCM)
- Fault in the monitoring software in the brake control module
What you can do
- 1Check whether the brake control module has stored its own codes and fix them first, as this code is then a follow-on fault
- 2Check whether other CAN-related codes sit in the engine control module and fix them first
- 3Check the CAN connectors at the engine control module and the brake control module for loose or corroded connections
- 4Look for chafed or pinched CAN wires. Use a multimeter to check that they have no break or short to ground or supply voltage
- 5Clear the code after repair and road test. If the fault is intermittent, check that the code is not set again
- 6Do not work on the braking system yourself. If the fault returns: have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the brake control module
Symptoms you may notice1
