What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) continuously receives steering angle information from the steering angle sensor module (SAS) over the CAN network. The code is set when communication with the steering angle sensor is disturbed or stops, or when the signal from it is faulty. The fault gives no noticeable symptoms for the driver.
Possible causes
- Disturbances or breaks on the CAN network
- Fault in the steering angle sensor module (SAS)
What you can do
- 1Read the codes in the engine control module and the steering angle sensor module, and fix other CAN-related codes first
- 2Check that the fuses are intact
- 3Check the CAN connectors at the engine control module and the steering angle sensor for loose or corroded contacts
- 4Look for chafed or pinched CAN wires. Use a multimeter to check that they have no break or short to ground or supply voltage
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool: follow the steering angle in live data and check that the value changes smoothly as the wheel is turned from lock to lock
- 6Do not work on the steering system yourself. If the fault returns: have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the steering angle sensor and the CAN network
