What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) has stopped receiving communication from the parking brake control module (PBM) over the CAN network. The code points to a fault in CAN communication as a whole, not to one particular control module. Although the code is titled lost communication with the park brake control module, it concerns the CAN network as a whole.
Possible causes
- No supply voltage to the parking brake control module (PBM)
- Break in the earth wire to the parking brake control module
- Contact resistance in the connections
- Break or short circuit on the CAN wires
- The parking brake control module is not intended for this car, for example a used module with different software or hardware
- A common fault on the CAN network, if several control modules have communication codes
What you can do
- 1Read the codes in the central electronics control module and other modules. If several modules show faults, check the central electronics control module first
- 2Check that the parking brake module fuses are intact and that its earth wire is secure
- 3Check CAN connections for contact resistance and oxidation. Look for chafed wires and use a multimeter to check for breaks or short circuits
- 4If the parking brake control module was recently replaced: check that it is intended for this vehicle
- 5Do not work on the parking brake yourself. If the fault returns: have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the module and CAN network
- 6Do not replace the central electronics control module unless diagnosis shows that it is faulty
