What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) receives vehicle configuration information from the central electronics control module (CEM) over the CAN network. The code is set when the engine control module detects that communication with the CEM stops or that the signal from it is faulty.
Possible causes
- Break in one of the CAN wires, or in the wiring to the central electronics control module
- Short circuit between the CAN wires
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
- The central electronics control module is not intended for this car, for example a used module with different software or hardware
- Internal fault in another control module on the same part of the CAN network
- Fault inside the engine control module (ECM)
What you can do
- 1Start with the codes in the central electronics control module. Stored communication codes in several control modules point to a shared fault on the CAN network
- 2Check that the fuses are intact
- 3Gently move the wiring and connectors during testing to see whether the fault appears
- 4Look for chafed CAN wires. Use a multimeter to check that they have no break or short to ground or supply voltage
- 5If the central electronics control module has been replaced: check that it is intended for this exact car
- 6If the fault returns: have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the communication. Do not replace the central electronics control module until a workshop has shown that it is faulty
Symptoms you may notice1
- The check engine warning light comes on or behaves abnormally
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
