What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) constantly receives the information it needs from the central electronics control module (CEM) and checks that the communication works. The code is set when communication stops, and the cruise control then disengages.
Possible causes
- Break or short circuit on the CAN wires
- The communication wire is shorted to ground or to supply voltage
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
- Short circuit in the connections
- The engine control module is not intended for this car, for example a used module with different software or hardware
- A common fault on the CAN network, if several control modules have stored communication faults
What you can do
- 1Start by reading the codes in the central electronics control module and fix those first
- 2Check that the fuses are intact and that the battery has good voltage
- 3Check the CAN network connectors for oxidation and loose contacts
- 4Look for chafed or pinched wiring. Use a multimeter to check that the wires have no break or short to ground or supply voltage
- 5Clear the code and road test the car to see whether it comes back
- 6If the fault returns: have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the central electronics control module and the CAN network. Do not replace that module unless diagnosis shows an internal fault
Symptoms you may notice1
- The cruise control does not engage
What the fault can affect1
- The cruise control is switched off while the fault is active
