What does this fault code mean?
The central electronics control module (CEM) sends a signal over the CAN network to the engine control module, stating whether the parking brake is applied or not. Although the code is titled missing message, it is set when the signal from the CEM is faulty. The code applies to cars with a mechanical parking brake.
Possible causes
- Fault in the central electronics control module (CEM)
- Fault in the link from the parking brake to the central electronics control module
- Break in one of the CAN network wires
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the contacts
- One of the CAN wires is shorted to ground or to supply voltage
- The CAN wires are shorted to each other
What you can do
- 1Read the codes in the central electronics control module and first fix any communication faults there
- 2Check that the link to the parking brake and the central electronics control module is secure and clean
- 3Check the CAN network connectors for contact resistance and oxidation
- 4Look for chafed CAN wires. Use a multimeter to check that they have no break or short to ground, supply voltage or each other
- 5Do not work on the parking brake yourself. If the fault returns: have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the parking brake, the central electronics control module and the CAN network
Symptoms you may notice1
- No noticeable symptoms for the driver
