What does this fault code mean?

The engine control module (ECM) registers a communication fault between itself and the central electronics control module (CEM) and stores the code in the engine control module. This code has no separate troubleshooting, so start with the codes in the CEM and in other control modules on the CAN network.

    Possible causes

    • Break in one of the CAN wires
    • Short circuit between the CAN wires
    • Internal fault in another control module on the same part of the CAN network

    What you can do

    1. 1Read the codes in the central electronics control module and other affected control modules and fix them first. Then clear this code
    2. 2Check that the fuses are intact
    3. 3Check the connectors on the CAN network for oxidation and loose contacts
    4. 4Look for chafed wires and use a multimeter to check that the CAN wires have no break or short circuit to each other
    5. 5If the fault returns: have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the CAN network and the control modules on it

    Symptoms you may notice1

    • No noticeable symptoms for the driver

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
