What does this fault code mean?
The immobilizer is built into the central electronics control module (CEM). Before the engine can start, the engine control module (ECM) checks that the immobilizer code matches the CEM. The code is set when communication between the CEM and the engine control module stops so that this check cannot be made. This can stop the engine from starting.
Possible causes
- Break in the communication between the central electronics control module and the engine control module
- A central electronics control module that is not programmed and has no immobilizer code
- Faulty central electronics control module
- Break in one of the CAN wires
- Short circuit between the CAN wires
- Internal fault in another control module on the same part of the CAN network
What you can do
- 1Read the codes in the central electronics control module first. If codes are stored there, troubleshoot according to them
- 2Check that the fuses are intact and that the battery has good voltage
- 3Check the CAN connections between the engine control module and the central electronics control module for oxidation and loose contacts
- 4Look for chafed wiring. Use a multimeter to check that the CAN wires have no break or short circuit
- 5If no codes are stored in the central electronics control module: have a workshop decide whether it needs programming or replacing
- 6After repair: start the engine and check that the code is not set again
Symptoms you may notice4
- Starter cranks but the engine fails to start
- Message in the text display
- The engine is hard to start and is cranked slowly
- The starter does not crank and there is no click when starting is attempted
